MTV and Yahoo have teamed up with reality-television pimp Mark Burnett to introduce a new spot to the MTV Movie Awards: a user-generated category for best movie spoof. 400 submissions have been whittled down to five finalists that Christina Norman, MTV's president, is really psyched about. See, despite what Sarah Silverman thinks, it's all about the fans at the MTV Movie Awards. President Norman explains, “It's their show and not only are we giving them a voice to celebrate their favorite movies, stars and moments, but we are truly making them the stars of the show." So we proles are running the asylum this year. Awesome. Later today, I'll watch the finalists.

A few things around the site to mention and discuss:
Chinese in the feeds
This was my bad. I misconfigured a plug-in, and it started to grab some random Chinese Twitter feed. I’m going to be traveling a lot in July, well outside of traditional internet access, so I’ll be needing to use an alternative method (like Twitter) to post from the field. I’m still debating whether it’s best to generate traditional posts, or just a persistent header (like I did for Sundance).
Follow-Up Email plugin
AndrewJS wrote in about troubles with this plug-in:
Your WP plugin that emails people regarding new comments for certain articles seems to be overly ambitious lately. I left a comment on your Finale PDF thread and checked that box, but am receiving follow up emails for several other articles also that I never subscribed to. I rarely leave comments on your site, and I checked those other articles just to make sure I hadn’t commented on them. This included the Marvel thread and something about a Screenwriter’s Dinner, and one or two others. They all poured in
overnight at once. Seems a bit odd.
Is anybody else having troubles with this plug-in? Is anyone else using it? I’m happy to troubleshoot it if people are finding it useful, but if not, the simplest solution would just be to remove it.
Live preview on comments
Some readers are having trouble with the live previews on the comments. If you’re one of them, shoot me an email at ask@johnaugust.com. Be sure to include which browser you’re using (e.g. Internet Explorer). Some readers have had success by breaking long comments into shorter sections. That really shouldn’t matter, but if it works, go for it.

According to a new report titled “At the Click of a Mouse†by Solutions Research Group, the PC is morphing from a work-related device to a digital “life hub,†with movie downloading and viewing being a core activity. According to the study, 47% of US-based PC users watched DVDs on their computers in May 2007, up from 29% last October. Over 15% of users had downloaded a full-length movie from the web (although only 8% of those were paid downloads.) The report also notes that 66% of surveyed consumers believe that one day, “all movies will be available at the click of a mouse,†with nearly three quarters of those between 30-49 believing the statement to be true.
Despite the enthusiasm, the report notes that only 30% of consumers have visited the movie sections at iTunes, with even less (under 10%) for WalMart and Amazon’s Unbox. Netflix is showing some promise out of the gate, however, with one in three users of that service having used their online instant viewing feature in the last month.

Filed under: Action & Adventure, Drama, Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Deals, Warner Brothers, Celebrities and Controversy, Fandom, Scripts & Screenwriting, New on DVD, Movie Marketing I didn't notice this when I recently reviewed the new DVD for The Fountain, but director Darren Aronofsky was making his displeasure with the stripped-down disc known on his blog page. As I noted in my review, the disc wasn't exactly free of extras -- it contained one medium-sized documentary, broken up into six chapters -- but other than that, there was nothing. On his page, Aronofsky says "As many of you can tell it [the DVD] is light on extras as compared to my previous DVD releases. Everything at the studio was a struggle. For instance, they didn't want to do a commentary track cause they felt it wouldn't help sales. I didn't have it in me to fight anymore. Whatever." He also notes "Niko, my friend who did the doc on the DVD came up with a novel idea. We recorded a commentary track ourselves. We're gonna post it on a site soon, http coming soon. You can play it and watch the flick and hopefully you'll enjoy it." He wraps up by noting that "I do hope to do a big special edition at some point, but for that to happen the DVD is gonna have to sell."
In other Aronofsky news, he recently chatted with Empire and confirmed to them that he will be doing "an adaptation of Noah's Ark." Aronofsky says "I'm pretty much done with the script." Hilariously, he defends himself against comparisons to Evan Almighty, noting "This is not a comedy. It's funny, because Noah's always been done as a comedy. This is definitely more the sci-fi version. It's the traditional Noah story, but it's told in a serious way. More fantasy than comedy." Permalink | Email this | Comments

This week, production began on ‘Ace of Hearts’, the first release under the new Reader’s Digest Family Films brand, according to a company press release. Peach Arch Entertainment is producing the film and will handle international distribution, while Fox will handle domestic marketing and distribution. Reader’s Digest will leverage its 40 million subscriber base (the largest magazine in America) via direct marketing, print and online promotions worldwide. The company also plans on leveraging its 26 other publications and web properties. The deal was brokered by the William Morris Agency and the Ziffren, Brittenham, Branca, Fischer, Stiffelman, Gilbert-Lurie, Cook, Johnson & Wolf law firm. Starring Dean Cain, ‘Ace of Hearts’ is a family adventure film following the adventures of a cop and his loyal German Shepard as they battle forces with a pack of wily criminals out for revenge. The film is tentatively slated for an early 2006 release. The script is based on a story that originally appeared in Reader’s Digest in 2002.
