Tom Cruise’s insanity is good for recruitment

Monday, January 28th, 2008
0128_tom_cruise_sag_00.JPG The leaked Scientology recruitment videos starring Tom Cruise have apparently been a good thing for the followers of Xenu, according to Page Six:
"Having presented these selective and out-of-context excerpts with the intent of creating both controversy and ridicule resulted in people searching for Church of Scientology Web sites," a rep for the faith told Page Six. Scientology turned up on the "most searched for" lists of various search engines.
Sorry, everyone, my bad. I was in one of those alien porn moods all last week and figured if anyone had some good links it’d be Scientologists. They, uh, actually had some freaky videos. Way freakier than what I was looking for. I won’t really get into it but I’ll never look at E.T. the same way again. Or Hot Pockets. *shudders*

IFFR REPORT #4

Monday, January 28th, 2008

IFFR 4Saturday and Sunday I saw some pretty amazing things and the festival finally seems to hit me (besides serious lack of sleep). One of the films I saw, No Country for Old Men, by the Coen brothers was already reviewed by my colleague Denise a little while ago. I throroughly enjoyed it even though I am not a huge Coens aficionado. For me Saturday started with the French animated compilation Fear(s) of the Dark, followed by the much anticipated Iranian/French animated film Persepolis. Sunday began with the new Wes Anderson film, The Darjeeling Limited, followed by the experimental rubbish of Lucky 7 (not reviewed in this report - it was really that bad). The weekend ended with a documentary about David Lynch, simply called LYNCH (more…)

Digital Kitchen: Sundance 08

Monday, January 28th, 2008

dkblood.jpg

We posted Digital Kitchen’s brand bumpers from last year’s Sundance Film Festival, and now they’re back with a couple more. Inspired by the legendary Eames film, Powers of Ten, each bumper zooms in and out of universes created by filmmakers deep in thought.

Aside from a little wonky tracking at the end of “Forest” (which might have been intentional), they’re elegant pieces strung together by pleasing transitions. The tone and concept are a nice fit for the Sundance moviegoers.

Heath Ledger may have died of natural causes

Monday, January 28th, 2008
0128_heath_ledger_natcauses_00.JPG In the latest round of speculation on Heath Ledger’s death, TMZ is reporting that sources connected to the case feel there’s a strong chance Heath died of natural causes and not accidental overdose:
The reason they think that -- it's now appearing that the level of toxicity (from medication) in Ledger's system was low enough that it may not have caused his death. These sources say Heath's heart stopped. It could have been a heart attack but it's not certain, at least not yet. Although it's bizarre that a 28-year-old could die of natural causes, it happens.
Pauly Shore presented his own conspiracy theory (video here) that it was the Olsen twins. Why someone would interview Pauly Shore is beyond me. I would’ve videotaped an ant carrying a potato chip instead. But only because I’m so dedicated to journalism. Also, I'm on the Pringles payroll. Hey, pec implants don't grow on trees. Yet...

In 2003, filmmaker Joe Myers took his camera crew to Centre Hall, Pennsylvania and documented the eight months leading up to the 130th Annual Centre County Grange Encampment and Fair.Although there are many large and thriving agricultural fairs held in the United States each year, the Centre County Grange Fair is unique in being "an encampment…

Blu-ray Review: Underworld Evolution

Monday, January 28th, 2008

Equal to the original in terms of the movie and disc.
Like the original, this follow-up to the 2003 action/horror piece has almost no plot to back its intense, violent, and brutal action. The gore factor here is at least twice as high, and the hand to hand combat leads to some wild brawls. For sheer intense action, Underworld Evolution delivers, but the movie’s dark world feels like it offers…
