Movie Review: Be Kind, Rewind to Nacho Libre

Monday, February 25th, 2008

If all Jack Black’s movies were on VHS, I’d want to rewind his latest, Be Kind, Rewind to the Nacho Libre mark.
Michel Gondry's new movie, Be Kind, Rewind, lacks the same humor and touching human moments of Jack Black's Nacho Libre. But it isn't a Jack Black film, and shouldn't be judged as such. It's a Michel Gondry film and fits quite logically in the annals of his past work for Bjork, The White Stripes, and The Chemical Brothers. He…

The Oscars: Ladies of the Red Carpet

Monday, February 25th, 2008

Scope it out. Here's some of Hollywood's hottest ladies on the red carpet at last night's Oscars: Heidi Klum, Jennifer Garner, Jessica Alba, Katherine Heigl and Best Actress winner Marion Cotillard. Feel free to pick them apart, marvel at them or perhaps throw a tuna sandwich at the screen. It's your call. Me? I'll be sitting here making Grey's Anatomy star Katherine Heigl watch me build a spaceship out of LEGOs at my desk. Yeah, let's see Patrick Dempsey make awesome laser sounds then get yelled at by his boss. McDreamy ain't got nothing on me.

Petra Nemcova and Sean Penn: I don’t even know

Monday, February 25th, 2008

Petra Nemcova and Sean Penn were spotted together at Elton John's Oscar after-party. I was there and it was a blast until Jack Nicholson had sex with an ice sculpture. Then it was the greatest party known to man. Anyway, Petra used to date James Blunt and now she's on to Sean Penn. I guess she likes dudes who are ugly as sin. That counts me out because I'm as beautiful as, uh, non-sin? I dunno. I tried to look up "non-sin" in the Bible but my hands started burning. Mostly because my roommate was pouring acids on my hands. It's his way of letting me know we're out of beer. He's good people.

Angelina Jolie has something in her belly

Monday, February 25th, 2008

Alright, let's get into the insanity that was this weekend. Before we jump into the Oscar aftermath, the Independent Spirit Awards also went down. They're kind of like the Oscars but everyone stands around talking about their odorless bowel movements. I'm telling you, it's a miracle of science. Anyway, Angelina Jolie picked the Spirit Awards as the venue to show off her protruding stomach. I'm no doctor but I'm pretty sure that's a baby in there. By my calculations there'll be roughly two Pitt-Jolies to every one Normie (that's us) by 2030. As long as the females look like Angelina, I embrace this future. I will also simultaneously unembrace pants.

Britney Spears’s Night Out with Dad

Monday, February 25th, 2008

Britney spearsAfter a three-hour visit with her sons on Saturday (her first since Jan. 3), Britney Spears continued her family time Saturday night, stepping out to Mastro’s Steakhouse in Beverly Hills with her father, Jamie.

Just before 8 p.m., the pop star and her dad were joined by an assistant, a family friend and two bodyguards for dinner. Clad in a purple silk dress, Spears smiled and appeared in good spirits as she headed inside.

“Britney looked stunning and everyone turned around to get a glimpse of her,” says a witness at the restaurant, adding that the group lead Spears to a private dining room. “Everyone seemed extremely protective of Britney.”

The party of six dined on a seafood tower with lobster, steak, french fries and lobster mashed potatoes. But Spears’s good mood seemed to diminish over dinner. According to an observer, “She seemed quiet.” After numerous bathroom and cigarette breaks, Spears and co. left the restaurant around 9:30 p.m., making their way through a pack of photographers with the help of restaurant staff.

Asked if he’d ever helped a celebrity exit the restaurant, a chef said, “Never! It was like being in a war zone. I almost lost my [chef’s] hat.”

Gone Baby Gone (2007)

Monday, February 25th, 2008

gone-baby-gone-poster.jpgI am one of many of Ben Affleck’s harshest critics. After witnessing some dismal acting performances by him in Daredevil and Armageddon, I pegged him for just another movie star who got lucky despite his limited acting ability. Along with his tabloid shennanigins with Jennifer Lopez, I felt very comfortable with my negative assessment of the man. But after selling him short for years, I must now eat some humble pie and say that Ben Affleck has talent. Much like Sophia Coppola, Affleck’s talent lies behind the camera rather than in front of it. His directorial debut is a stunning piece of work. Gone Baby Gone isn’t just competently put together, but confidently executed. Although I have questioned Affleck’s talents in the past, I can now say with certainty that this is one of the best films of 2007. (more…)

Lindsay Lohan Gets Razzied

Monday, February 25th, 2008

Lindsay LohanLindsay Lohan is raking in the statues this Academy Awards weekend, just not the kind named Oscar.

At the annual Razzie Awards, honoring the worst in film, the actress took home record honors for her work in the horror-suspense movie, I Know Who Killed Me.

The movie beat out the previous Razzie record-holder, Showgirls by rounding up eight awards including worst actress and worst screen couple for Lohan (she plays two people) and worst picture.

But Lohan wasn’t alone: Eddie Murphy was a close second, nabbing this year’s worst actor and worst supporting actor. His comedy Norbit snagged three Razzies, while Daddy Day Camp, starring Cuba Gooding Jr. took home an award, too, for worst prequel or sequel.

Discuss: Why was Brad Renfro Excluded from the In Memorium at the Oscars?

Monday, February 25th, 2008

Last night, as per every year at the Oscars, they take a brief break from all the self-congratulatory back-patting to acknowledge the deaths in the movie industry over the preceding year. As several of our readers (and Scott Weinberg, who was going ballastic on IM about it) noted, Brad Renfro, who died of a drug overdose on January 15 of this year, was mysteriously excluded. The troubled actor, best known for his work in The Client, Apt Pupil, and Bully, had been known to have a drug problem for years, and had a drunk driving and heroin-possession arrest in May 2006, but was supposedly "working hard on his sobriety" at the time of his death.

The In Memorium was supposed to be for everyone who died between February 1, 2007 and January 31, 2008. Heath Ledger, who died a week after Renfro, was included in the montage. No word from the Academy that I've seen yet on why Renfro wasn't included -- an honest oversight? A deliberate sweeping-under-the-red-carpet because heroin was involved? What do you think about Renfro being shut out of Oscar's "In Memorium"?
