Ashlee and Pete WentzNewlyweds Ashlee and Pete Wentz have confirmed that they are expecting their first child.

George Clooney and Sarah Larson Split

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

George Clooney and Sarah LarsonGeorge Clooney and his girlfriend Sarah Larson have split up after a year of dating, a source says.

The actor’s rep, Stan Rosenfield, would only say: “We do not comment on George’s personal life.”

The pair initially met in Las Vegas nearly four years ago, when Larson, a onetime Fear Factor winner, was a cocktail server at The Whiskey Bar. But it wasn’t until the pair met for the second time in June 2007 in Las Vegas that sparks flew.

Larson, 29, and Clooney, 47, made their public debut together at the Venice and Deauville film festivals last September. Later that month, the twosome were injured in a motorcycle accident.

Earlier this year, Larson accompanied Clooney to the Oscars – the first girlfriend ever to go with him to the event.

Though there was speculation that Clooney would end his longtime bachelorhood, in March the actor shot down rumors of an engagement.

Next up for Clooney is the Coen brothers movie Burn After Reading, co-starring Brad Pitt, due out in September.

Dave Gibbons On ‘Watchmen’ and Alan Moore

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

Let us close out the week with a third Watchmen story, shall we? Dave Gibbons, the artist behind the iconic book, gave an excellent interview to Den of Geek. Of course, the first questions directed at him centered on the upcoming movie -- and while he's not officially involved, Gibbons visited the set and blogged about it in December. He has been unfailingly supportive of the film and all involved; the guy even created the first promo poster handed out at 2007's ComicCon.

He was a little more guarded during this interview, but still admired what he had seen of the filming: "The most important thing is that the Watchmen movie be a good movie. From what I've seen of it, I think it is going to be a good movie, and I think it's going to be as faithful to the original graphic novel as is possible, given the constraints of a movie and the nature of a graphic novel. I think that as long as it's true to the spirit of the comic book, and as long as - in broad strokes - it follows the plot and the characterisations ... I don't think you can ask for every individual detail to be replicated. There are hardcore fans out there who'll be satisfied with nothing less than a word-for-word, line-for-line, scene-for-scene recreation of the comic book. I didn't believe that was ever going to happen. Certainly, from what I've seen of the movie, it looks like it'll be a good movie and very faithful to the comic book. If it isn't, it won't be for want of trying. Everybody's using the graphic novel as their bible, and really doing their best to pay tribute to it, I think. "

Slim for Richard Gotainer

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

French motion director Slim (a.k.a. Aniss Slimane) poured a heaping helping of color and sunshine into this whimsical music video for 80s pop star Richard Gotainer. As silly and free-spirited as the illustrations are, there are some quite beautiful compositions throughout, giving the piece as unexpected dash of slickness that I like.

I won’t comment on the music or Mr. Gotainer’s performance except to say that I find them both wildly entertaining. Apparently, Mr. Gotainer wrote the song to promote the joys of vacationing in the Champagne region of France. Based on this video, it looks like maybe Mr. Gotainer didn’t quite have enough to time to shoot on location. Ah well, c’est la vie. A green screen and some CG can do in a pinch.

If you just couldn’t get enough Richard Gotainer from this video (and who could?), there’s more in store on YouTube.

Thanks to Cyril Drouin for the tip!

Sex and the City (2008)

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

main-film-poster-sex-and-the-city.jpgI’ve only recently become a fan of the Sex and the City series. Obviously i’d heard of it, but i’d just never got around to watching them. Then my friend lent me the boxset of all six series and I watched them in order from start to finish. Now i’m an addict. Yes, it is kind of unrealistic that these four women with completely different jobs and outlooks would be friends in real life, but forget that, this is tv. Their contrasting tastes on sex, fashion and romance make for addictive and compelling viewing. Anyway, my conversion happened just in time for the release of the movie, so I was extremely excited about seeing how it transferred to the big screen. (more…)

Ashlee Simpson & Pete Wentz confirm pregnancy (Whee.)

Wednesday, May 28th, 2008

While this comes as a shock to absolutely no one, Ashlee and Pete Wentz finally confirmed they have a bun in the oven last night on their website FriendsOrEnemies.com:
"While many have speculated about this, we wanted to wait until after the first trimester to officially confirm that we are expecting our first child. This is truly the most joyous time in our lives and we are excited to share the happy news and start our family."
- Pete and Ashlee Wentz
This news confirms that their asshat video about making a baby was, in fact, a sad indicator of the future. Super duper. I'm overjoyed for their unborn fetus. Go ahead and take a good look at your father, kid. I believe there's a technical term for your situation. What was it again? Oh, right: UNBELIEVABLY FUCKED. Best of luck to you, Baby Wentz.

Sex and the City NYC Premiere: I hope they wear insane dresses. Oh, good!

Wednesday, May 28th, 2008

Sarah Jessica Parker and the girls dazzled New York last night at the premiere of Sex and the City: The Movie. And by dazzled I mean these broads look ridiculous. For a show that's about fashion you'd figure they'd at least look somewhat hot and not like my high school prom if everyone was 40. All that said, I present to you, for your mocking pleasure, the lovable characters of Sex and the City: HorseFace, Slutty Cougar, The One Who Used to Be Hot Five Years Ago and Does it Matter? Enjoy!

Inconvenient Measures to Combat ‘Indiana Jones’ Pirates

Wednesday, May 28th, 2008

The nomadic DVD peddlers in Chinatown and other urban areas seem virtually unstoppable, but that hasn't kept Hollywood studios from launching various attempts to prevent movie piracy. Boing Boing reports on the rumor that at least one theater has been silencing the soundtrack in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull throughout the film in order to mess with potential bootleggers trying to record the thing. If true, it's got to be one of the most brain dead attempts at security since the rise of quart-sized bags. When you really get down to it, most two-bit criminals with camcorders in their laps don''t really care if the quality of the movie they're recording suffers, since the resulting product will already feature lo-fi video, the overlapping sounds of laughter and other audience reactions, and silhouetted cameos from patrons venturing to the concession stands or taking bathroom breaks. With all that, the intermittent exclusion of music doesn't sound like a major concern for the bad guys.

Studio anti-piracy measures are notoriously ill-conceived. Premieres and all-media screenings often force critics and even the filmmakers themselves to undergo intense evaluations before they're allowed to enter the theaters, while films open to the public, where pirates are more likely to show up, don't take any precautions. Granted, multiplexes wouldn't help their business if attending them felt like entering an airport terminal, but that doesn't mean there isn't a better way to prevent the crimes from taking place. Anyone care to offer some ideas?
