  9 - Teaser
A new era in animated storytelling begins on 9.9.09. Visionary filmmakers Tim Burton (The Corpse Bride, Charlie and The Chocolate Factory) and Timur Bekmambetov (Wanted, Nightwatch) join forces to produce wunderkind director Shane Acker’s distinctively original and thrilling tale. 9 stars Elijah Wood, John C. Reilly, Jennifer Connelly, Martin Landau, Christopher Plummer and Crispin Glover and features the music of Danny Elfman. When 9 (The Lord of the Ring’s Elijah Wood) first comes to life, he finds himself in a post-apocalyptic world. All humans are gone, and it is only by chance that he discovers a small community of others like him taking refuge from fearsome machines that roam the earth intent on their extinction. Despite being the neophyte of the group, 9 convinces the others that hiding will do them no good. They must take the offensive if they are to survive, and they must discover why the machines want to destroy them in the first place. As they’ll soon come to learn, the very future of civilization may depend on them.
Directed by: Shane Acker
Starring: Elijah Wood, Jennifer Connelly, Martin Landau, Christopher Plummer, John C. Reilly

Blessed Is the Match - Trailer
Blessed Is the Match is the first documentary feature about Hannah Senesh, the World War II-era poet and diarist who became a paratrooper, resistance fighter and modern-day Joan of Arc. Safe in Palestine in 1944, she joined a mission to rescue Jews in her native Hungary. Shockingly, it was the only outside rescue mission for Jews during the Holocaust. Hannah parachuted behind enemy lines, was captured, tortured and ultimately executed by the Nazis. Her mother Catherine witnessed the entire ordeal - first as a prisoner with Hannah and later as her advocate, braving the bombed-out streets of Budapest in a desperate attempt to save Hannah. With unprecedented access to the Senesh family archive, this powerful story unfolds through the writings and photographs of Hannah and Catherine Senesh.
Directed by: Roberta Grossman
Starring: Meri Roth, Marcela Noh_nková, Alona Tal, Joan Allen

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button - Fincher - Roundtable
“I was born under unusual circumstances.” And so begins “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” adapted from the 1920s story by F. Scott Fitzgerald about a man who is born in his eighties and ages backwards: A man, like any of us, who is unable to stop time. We follow his story set in New Orleans from the end of World War I in 1918, into the 21st century, following his journey that is as unusual as any man’s life can be. Directed by David Fincher and starring Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett with Taraji P. Henson, Tilda Swinton, Jason Flemyng, Elias Koteas and Julia Ormond, “Benjamin Button,” is a grand tale of a not so ordinary man and the people and places he discovers along the way, the loves he finds, the joys of life and the sadness of death, and what lasts beyond time.

Madea Goes To Jail - Trailer 2a
At long last, Madea returns to the big screen in TYLER PERRY’S MADEA GOES TO JAIL. This time America’s favorite irreverent, pistol-packin’ grandmomma is raising hell behind bars and lobbying for her freedom…Hallelujer! After a high-speed freeway chase puts Madea (TYLER PERRY) in front of the judge, her reprieve is short-lived as anger management issues get the best of her and land her in jail. A gleeful Joe (TYLER PERRY) couldn’t be happier at Madea’s misfortune. But Madea’s eccentric family members the Browns (DAVID and TAMALA MANN) rally behind her, lending their special "country" brand of support. Meanwhile, Assistant District Attorney Joshua Hardaway (DEREK LUKE) is on the fast track to career success. But Hardaway lands a case too personal to handle - defending young prostitute and former drug addict Candace Washington (KEISHA KNIGHT PULLIAM) - and asks his fiancée and fellow ADA Linda Holmes (ION OVERMAN) to fill in on his behalf. When Candace ends up in jail, Madea befriends the young woman, protecting her in a "motherly" way as only Madea can.

Blu-ray Review: The House Bunny

Monday, December 22nd, 2008

The House Bunny hops up and down and all around, never quite finding its mark.
The story of the ugly duckling that eventually becomes a beautiful swan is one that Hollywood tells over and over again with varying results. As such stories go, the recent Anna Faris comedy, The House Bunny, falls somewhere short of satisfying, but not in the complete disaster range. As a social commentary the film is far closer to disaster. In…

Rex Box – Grip Wrench

gripwrench

I’ve been waiting for this ever since I saw early artwork on the Rex Box (Rex Crowle) blog, Hairyteeth (By the way, you may know more of Rex’s work from the immensely popular PS3 game, LittleBigPlanet). Gripwrench has launched! Rex has been working on this 10 part series for MTV for what seems like forever, and its a pleasure to see his unique character design and animation go live in these longer form pieces.

I can sit and continue how great I think this stuff is, or you can stop wasting time and go watch the clips and read other material on the site right now, including a great snippet on how Rex came up with the character in ‘The Making‘ and some crazy Grip-Wrench’d posters in ‘The Meat’.

So, enjoy: Grip Wrench.

And for extra giggles, check out his myspace.

DVD Review: The X-Files: I Want to Believe (Three-Disc Special Edition + Digital Copy)

Sunday, December 21st, 2008

I?m a blank slate, a veritable tabula rasa when it comes to all things X-Filey.
Written by El Puerquito Magnifico I’ve only watched The X-Files television series twice. The first time was an episode featuring a crazy inbred family who killed their neighbors. The episode scared the pants off of me and I loved it, but for some reason I never fully immersed myself in the series. The second time I tuned it, it was just a…

Movie Review: Yes Man

Sunday, December 21st, 2008

?Yes Man? is a pleasant diversion.
Written by Hombre DivertidoYes, the formula is obvious and reminiscent of Liar Liar, but this film is not as predictable, and succeeds by simply being more genuine.Jim Carrey plays Carl Allen, a man who retreated into self-imposed seclusion after suffering through a divorce, routinely says no to any offer that might lead him from his dreary…

DVD Review: Latitude Zero

Sunday, December 21st, 2008

And Zero would be correct.
Latitude Zero is an odd, weird, cartoonish international production that’s almost too bizarre to explain. Shot in Japan yet entirely in English with both American and Japanese actors, this is supposed to be a spectacle. Instead, it’s a strange fantasy film that is amongst the weirdest to ever come from the usual team that handled the…
