Onitsuka Tiger: Electric Tiger Land

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

Together with Strawberry Frog in Amsterdam, B-Reel directed, animated and produced this colorful spot for Onitsuka Tiger’s new campaign around the theme of “Electric Tiger Land.” It’s a fun 3D ride through a neon wonderland, and the end shot (pictured above) is just beautiful.

Fuck Death

Wednesday, January 30th, 2008

fuckdeath.jpg

Fuck Death is Graydon’s Sheppard’s way of helping the Fuck Death Foundation spread its message and achieve its goal of the “elimination of death through the generation and distribution of funds to strategically selected causes and initiatives worldwide.”

Yeah, the animation is purposefully cruddy, but the writing and some of the ideas are pretty clever, all of which Graydon handled on his own. (My favorite bit is the Haley’s Comet to Game Boy transition.)

This post was originally a Quickie, but I’ve got a soft-spot in my heart for post-human (or transhuman, depending on your take) messages. I was introduced to the whole concept of living forever when I read Ray Kurzweil’s The Age of Spiritual Machines a while back. That flipped a few switches for me, and eventually led me to Aubrey de Grey and his bullet-proof defense of anti-aging research.

For those interested, here’s Aubrey de Grey at TED. Yes, he looks like a rejected member of ZZ Top, but he’s a pretty damn interesting guy.

Fuck Death Federation’s approach to the issue is refreshingly wry and, for lack of a better word, cool. Graydon’s animation style fits nicely with their “fuck this shit” tone.

Do I Have Your Attention?

Laundry! finished this video for the Blood Arm over the holidays and it was just released. It’s got sweet cel-animated type and a grab bag of op-art printed over the 2-tone video. Great look and really great moments of animation throughout. Love it!

Digital Kitchen: Sundance 08

Monday, January 28th, 2008

We posted Digital Kitchen’s brand bumpers from last year’s Sundance Film Festival, and now they’re back with a couple more. Inspired by the legendary Eames film, Powers of Ten, each bumper zooms in and out of universes created by filmmakers deep in thought.

Aside from a little wonky tracking at the end of “Forest” (which might have been intentional), they’re elegant pieces strung together by pleasing transitions. The tone and concept are a nice fit for the Sundance moviegoers.

The Tale Continues…

Sunday, January 27th, 2008

You may have caught wind of a new company launched by Passion Pictures called Strange Beast. Like Psyop’s Blacklist, Strange Beast has built a roster of (mostly young) international talent that’s hard to fit into existing categories. Their initial lineup is strong: Encyclopedia Pictura, Amautalab, Lorenzo Fonda, The Blackheart Gang, Takeo, James Price—

Wait a tick! Back up. Was that The Blackheart Gang I saw? Indeed it was!

tbg.jpg

It’s been about a year and a half since we posted TBG’s Hieronymus Bosch-inspired mini-opera, “The Tale of How.” After hearing nothing about them since that time, I’d assumed they’d disbanded and sold their souls to commercial interests. But it appears I was too hasty.

Not only is the merry bunch still around, they’re planning an epic sequel entitled “The Tale of Then.” Gives me goosebumps just thinking about it. More information can be found on their blog.

Their site holds further gems in the Work section, where you can review what the Gang has been up to since their big debut. Their projects are satisfyingly epic, odd and charming—often at the same time.
